The Future is Here & It’s Called Ultimate Pool
Competitive billiards has a reputation. For a long time, the image most people picture is dimly lit halls, long silences, and players slowly pacing around a table while nothing much happens. It's a sport that takes real skill and sharp focus. But it has also, for too long, had a hard time keeping a crowd's attention.
But that’s all changing. Ultimate Pool USA is actively building something brand new, and it’s already turning heads in a big way.
What is Ultimate Pool?
Ultimate Pool is a professional 8-ball pool organization that was founded in the UK in 2020. It set out to do one thing: make pool more exciting — for players and for anyone watching. The format is built around faster matches, a shot clock that keeps the pressure on, and a set of rules designed to create real drama at every stage of a match.
It caught on quickly overseas. Within a few years, Ultimate Pool was on live television in 66 countries, drawing millions of viewers and building a fan base that hadn't existed for pool before. Then, the organization set its sights on America.
In January 2025, the Ultimate Pool Group made it official. Ultimate Pool USA was born.
As Managing Director Jordan Chavoush put it at the time: "Bringing Ultimate Pool to the United States has been a cherished dream since the inception of the Ultimate Pool Group. This expansion isn't just a milestone for our brand; it's a journey into a new chapter of growth and development."
How the Format Works & Why It Feels So Different
Before we get into what's happening right now in the US, it helps to understand what makes Ultimate Pool different from the 8-ball pool most people grew up playing.
The biggest difference is the shot clock. In a standard pool match, a player can take as long as they want on any shot. Ultimate Pool doesn't allow that. Every shot has a time limit — 30 seconds — and the clock starts the moment the balls stop moving. Take too long and it's a foul. That one rule alone changes the entire feel of the game.
In league play, there's also a match clock — a total time limit placed on the whole match with the clock only stopping between games. The higher-skilled player starts on a negative score and has 30 minutes to chase down the lower-ranked player before the buzzer sounds. Every second counts — every shot matters.
Ultimate Pool USA is Already Big… & Getting Bigger
This is where things get really exciting for pool players.
Ultimate Pool USA launched its league operations across the country and quickly built out a network of local franchises. From Dallas, Texas to San Antonio, to Iowa and beyond, the league is actively running weekly competition nights at venues in multiple cities. The Dallas franchise alone had 254 registered players across 32 teams as of mid-2026, with 6,700 racks completed just in the current season.
The league runs on a season structure. Players compete in weekly league nights, earn rankings, and work toward their city's Grand Finals Qualifier. Qualify through league play, and you earn a spot at the national stage: the Ultimate Pool USA Grand Finals.
The 2025 Grand Finals were held at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee, North Carolina, and the numbers tell the whole story: $438,850 in total prize money, with the winning team taking home a $100,000 pay day! Players represented roughly 40 states, and a live audience of 1.1 million viewers worldwide. That's not a local pool tournament. That's a national sporting event.
The 2026 Grand Finals return to Harrah's Cherokee, November 2-7, with over $100,000 on the line for the top team.
